2009 Training Prospectus Now Available

The 2009 Prospectus includes a complete listing of training courses for shipowners, managers and operators. New courses have been added to keep industry updated with changes in regulations, technology and industry issues.

New Portfolio of Offshore Training Courses

A range of offshore courses will be offered in 2009 through the USA Academy in Houston. These courses will also be available through the ABS Academies in Singapore and Busan by mid-year.

ABS Academy Gears Up to Support ISO 9001:2008 Changes

A recent update to the ISO 9001:2008 quality standard contains new and important wording that stresses training be a part of the requirements for ISO registered companies. In particular, Clause 6.2.1 now states that “personnel performing work affecting conformity to product requirements shall be competent on the basis of appropriate education, training, skills and experience.” Product conformity is applicable in its widest sense, encompassing many of the processes that can affect a company’s product, service or other deliverable.

To assist shipowning and ship managing companies comply with these requirements, ABS Academy has increased its repertoire of courses and has developed a supplemental training allocation matrix which identifies pertinent courses applicable to job responsibilities ranging from administrative roles to executive-level personnel.

Singapore Academy Offers Public Training Courses

ABS Academy in Singapore has announced a public schedule of training courses. For several years, the Singapore Academy has offered customized on-site training for clients. In 2008, more than 700 participants from 74 companies attended. This activity will continue in addition to the public schedule of courses. Click to view the 2009 training schedule for Singapore.

Amar Hanspal was recently appointed to manage the ABS Academy in Singapore. Hanspal is well known to many shipping companies in Asia Pacific region and has been leading the organization and delivery of many of the training courses. He is tasked with rolling out a public schedule and has now recruited several additional instructors to deliver the materials.

2009 Public Course Schedule at USA Academy

Over 100 training days are available in the first half of the year with new topics including compliance with the new ILO regulations and internal auditor training for compliance with ISM, ISO and OHSAS requirements. Pavan Lall has been appointed as manager for the USA Academy. Lall is an experienced mariner, superintendent, surveyor and auditor with practical operational experience.
